The Natural Language Acquisition (NLA) Framework, identified and developed by Marge Blanc and Barry Prizant, is a description of the six stages of gestalt language development, a quantification of those stages, and a documentation of the natural supports that allow gestalt language processors (GLP’s) to progress through the stages (Blanc, 2012).
At Sensory Kids & Social Minds, we use child-led, play-based, and relationship-based treatment methods in tandem with principles of the NLA framework to support children who use echolalia (also referred to as “scripting”) to communicate. The NLA framework focuses on guiding individuals from echolalia (repetition of chunks of language or “gestalts”) towards flexible, self-generated language. Through intentional language modeling, our therapists help clients break down gestalts into smaller units (mitigation) and build unique combinations to support functional communication skills.
In 1:1 sessions, speech therapists trained in NLA use child-led play and multimodal communication (e.g., gestures, augmentative and alternative communication methods) in our sensory-rich environment to support clients in advancing through the stages of language development. Therapists provide language models that match the client’s current developmental stage while strategically scaffolding toward spontaneous, flexible speech. This integrative approach ensures that children develop practical language skills while engaging in activities that support overall communication, sensory integration, and social interaction. By focusing on meaningful exchanges and tailoring strategies to each child’s unique needs, this method fosters confident and authentic communication skills across all environments.
How Does It Work?
A speech therapist trained in gestalt language processing will begin with a comprehensive evaluation to assess your child’s communication patterns, including their use of echolalia, stage of language processing, and sensory preferences. This assessment helps the therapist identify the most effective strategies for language modeling and interaction.
Based on the evaluation, the therapist will recommend an individualized treatment plan, including the optimal frequency of sessions per week to support consistent progress. Each session is structured to balance direct therapy goals with opportunities for spontaneous, meaningful communication. Families receive ongoing support and coaching to reinforce language strategies at home, promoting generalization of skills to everyday life.
