Pivotal Response Treatment at Sensory Kids & Social Minds
Pivotal Response Treatment, or PRT, is another evidence based intervention used within our ABA Department. It focuses on strengthening “pivotal” areas of learning that have a broad and positive impact on a child’s overall development.
What PRT Targets
PRT aims to build skills in:
• Motivation
• Self initiation
• Self management
• Responsivity to multiple cues
By strengthening these foundational capacities, children become more able to learn across activities, routines, and environments.
How PRT Works
PRT uses a naturalistic, play based approach to increase a child’s motivation to interact, communicate, and learn. Strategies are embedded into familiar activities and daily routines so that learning feels meaningful and connected to the child’s interests. PRT is often delivered for 25 or more hours per week and can take place at home, in school, or in clinic settings.
A defining feature of PRT is that everyone involved in the child’s life is encouraged to use PRT methods consistently. This includes parents, caregivers, teachers, and therapists. Many families describe PRT as a lifestyle shift that supports growth throughout the day rather than only during scheduled sessions.
Evidence for PRT
PRT is one of the most studied and well validated behavioral treatments for autism. More than twenty studies have shown improvements in communication skills in many children who receive PRT. Research includes therapist delivered sessions, teacher delivered sessions in school settings, and parent implemented sessions at home. A 2017 review of brain imaging studies found evidence that PRT improves brain activity related to sociability and communication.
